This brief discusses the EU's approach toward China in the context of Asia’s constantly changing security landscape and economic trends. The author argues that Europe should stop emphasizing multilateral and law-based solutions as a substitute for the hard power it does not have. To ensure its access to Asia's opening markets and play a more central security role in the region, the EU adopt a different trade strategy, reward compromise among differing parties and build on its growing arms trade policy.
