This brief reviews the safety of nuclear power plants in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and whether they will be safer in the future. Indeed, if stress tests conducted in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi accident are to be believed, all of the operating plants in the region require significant safety upgrades. That is why, the brief concludes, the EU and the IAEA should assist the CEE countries meet higher safety standards, especially when new plants are built.
