This report discusses Afghanistan’s prospects in 2014. The authors claim that, after the drawdown, Afghanistan will face: 1) new elections which will probably bring a new president, 2) the transfer of responsibility from the US military to the Afghan National Security Forces, and 3) the change from an economy driven by foreign expenditures to one more reliant on domestic sources of growth. They conclude that the US can and should seek a role in Afghanistan in the future and provide recommendations on how Washington should do this.
