This commentary discusses the political situation in Ukraine following the government’s decision not to sign a free trade agreement with the EU in late 2013. The author argues that there are three scenarios that could develop over the short term: 1) a continued stand-off between protestors and the authorities; 2) a slight increase in political repression; and 3) violent clashes between protestors and security forces that will force Kiev to declare a state of emergency.
