This paper examines Iran’s relationship with Afghanistan and how this in turn relates to Tehran’s complicated relations with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The author argues that these inter-relationships should not be interpreted solely in terms of the Sunni-Shi’a divide, but rather in terms of realpolitik and interests. He concludes that the current mold of a zero sum game could be overcome by focusing on the many areas of mutual interest and common problems that concern both countries.
