This paper talks about how and why Karachi in Pakistan has played a part in supporting the Pakistani and Afghan Taliban as well as al-Qaeda. In particular, the author looks at the strategic importance of Karachi as a link to Afghanistan and its Pashtun population; the role of its religious leadership in Afghanistan's past insurgencies; and the presence, links and activities of the Taliban in the city and its part as a recruitment and training ground.
