This paper evaluates the importance, relevance and role of military reservists in today's NATO. Yes, keeping them optimally trained is a challenge, the paper's author admits, but he also argues that reservists provide considerable value added to national defense, and at a fraction of the cost of maintaining professional soldiers. Providing these benefits, however, requires the active cooperation of employers, which is why the paper concludes with five recommendations on how to ensure and enhance the availability of reservists to meet NATO's needs.
