Dec 2013

In October 2013 the Mozambican National Resistance Movement (Renamo) declared an end to the General Peace Agreement which it had signed with the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) in 1992. The announcement, unsurprisingly, has raised fears that the country might lapse back into civil war. With this possibility in mind, this policy brief analyzes Renamo’s capacity to wage war and the Mozambican government’s ability to contain the spread of insecurity. It also assesses the long-term political future of Renamo.
