This working paper analyzes the role of remittances in the migration development process. The author provides a conceptual tool for understanding the importance of remittances for developing countries and also gives global overview of various types of remittance flows. The paper assesses the impact of various remittance schemes in developing and conflict-prone countries, and provides several suggestions on how appropriate policy measures could contribute to making remittances into an effective development tool.
