This monograph looks at the economic and security importance of the Spratly Islands to the surrounding claiming states and the potential for instability that has resulted from their contestation. It then delves into the international law and the maritime jurisdiction claims made through the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It also explains US interests and resulting involvement in the region and discusses actions the US could take to promote peace and economic development there.
