Looking at political events in the South Caucasus in November 2013, this paper examines how the concept of self-determination and sovereignty has changed in the region since the end of the Cold War. It then compares how sovereignty is perceived in the Western and the Eastern part of the South Caucasus and outlines some alternative models of sovereignty in practice. Finally, it gives a summary of recommendations for regional states and relevant international actors to encourage self-determination in the region.
