This paper analyzes Australia’s relations with the armed forces of its Southeast Asian neighbors. The author first points out to opportunities that could arise from a defense relationship between Australia and Indonesia. He then goes on to argue that Australia should not neglect its other ties with regional partners, in particular with Malaysia and Singapore, as these provide crucial depth to regional engagement and a hedge against any future complications or cooling in ties with Jakarta.
