This article examines what the Australian Defense Force (ADF) needs to be prepared for in the future. The author argues that there are four main tasks that the ADF needs to be able to do: 1) defend the Australasian continent; 2) assist international forces; 3) conduct counter-insurgency operations; and 4) offer disaster relief. He contends that significantly higher spending will be required for national security, although building the public case for such an increase is a task for government leaders and not the defense department or the ADF itself.
