This brief examines the prospects for US or NATO support for Afghanistan after the end of the ISAF mission in 2014. The author argues that by delaying agreements with the US and NATO, Afghan President Hamid Karzai might force them to approve the 'zero option', that is, quitting the NATO training mission and US counter-terror operations. According to the author, this scenario runs the risk of endangering Afghanistan on a scale much greater than that seen in Iraq.
