This article examines the changing regional order in East Asia and the implications for Australia. The author argues that the new hierarchical order in the region is not one where states must choose between the US or China. She says this is because China has mainly been trying to incorporate itself into the existing order and because US allies like Australia have already chosen their side. She then goes on to say that the crucial point in terms of strategy for East Asian states, including Australia, then is to maintain US support while also finding ways to include and accommodate China into the existing system.
