This paper discusses the work and training of health surveillance assistants (HSA) in Zomba District, Malawi, with a special focus on the preventive services they provide. The authors argue that HSAs face numerous challenges related to training, as well as problems in defining their roles and those of their supervisors. They also suggest that there are a number of difficulties related to the setting of priorities for HSAs. The authors end the piece by providing recommendations on how to improve the policy and training initiatives dealing with HSAs.
