This paper discusses the impact of contemporary piracy on international relations and maritime security. Some of the specific topics addressed include the geopolitical dimensions of piracy, to include the existing policies of ship owners; the role of navies, private security forces and NATO in ensuring maritime security and defense; the legal and humanitarian problems of trying to insure piracy-driven risks; and the costs of piracy, to include prosecuting its practitioners.
