This paper argues that NATO should increase its presence in the Gulf of Guinea, where threats to regional, Euro-Atlantic and international security and prosperity are on the rise. While recognizing that any decision to realign strategic priorities is ultimately a political one, the authors present four factors that justify greater cooperative security in the region. These include: 1) the NATO interests which are at stake, 2) international legitimacy for action, 3) established strategic guidance for the employment of Allied maritime forces and other means outside of NATO territory, and 4) relevant NATO operational competencies and expertise.
