This commentary talks about the anti-government protests which first broke out in late 2013 in Ukraine, with a particular focus on the Maidan protests in Kiev. The authors say that the most striking feature about the protests is their focus on citizenship and their apolitical nature. They say this is also true of the relationships between the protesters and the country's political opposition parties. They claim that none of these parties has full control of the demonstrations, and that they have lost a significant portion of the control they had since the radicalization and escalation of the protests in January 2014.
