This policy brief talks about political protests in Thailand and argues that they are about more than what international commentators have reported. The author argues that they are more than just the “urban middle class” trying to hold on to power or the “establishment” trying to take back power from Thaksin, or even a fear of succession for the Thai monarchy. According to him, the political crisis involves a competition between two definitions of democracy; one that emphasizes its form - giving priority to elections - and the other which focuses more on the spirit of democracy.
