This commentary examines why Morocco has failed to enact genuine political reforms, despite the demands of its people. Three obvious reasons include 1) the status quo’ism of local political elites, 2) the regime’s ability to nip protest movements in the bud, and 3) the foot-dragging of a reluctant monarchy. Such reluctance, however, is only buying time. If changes do not occur, especially in the social and economic spheres, frustrations will grow and most likely lead to social unrest and violence.
