This paper profiles Russia's North Caucasus region, including 1) its governmental, ethnic and religious composition, 2) its insurgent groups and the instability they're causing, and 3) Moscow's current attempts to cope with the insurgency problem. (Note: In the last case, the paper gauges just how effective Russia's counterinsurgency measures have been – not only in the region, but also in preventing the spread of instability into adjoining areas.)
