This paper surveys the security situation in the North Caucasus since 2011 and the developments which may impact the security of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and into the coming decade. It looks especially at the activities of Islamic terrorist organizations in the region, developments in the individual republics, the influence of Georgia and Azerbaijan on the region and the activities of the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. It also discusses the cultural and civilizational changes in the region and the strategies that Moscow has been adopting to deal with them.
