This paper explores the political landscape of Afghanistan in the run-up to the country’s 2014 presidential elections. In particular, the paper 1) looks at the different political actors in Afghanistan as well as their motives, form, history, strengths and areas of operation; 2) examines the five most notable presidential candidates and the groups they represent; and 3) identifies some of the emerging political trends and issues in that could have an effect on the future of the country's political system and constitutional order.
