This commentary discusses the steps which China, Japan, and South Korea are taking to modernize their air forces. The author argues that China's modernization is particularly significant and that its greater power-projection capabilities and efforts to regain what it views as its “rightful” strategic presence in East Asia will greatly complicate crisis management by the US and its allies.
