This report examines how nuclear testing at the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan between 1949 and 1991 has impacted and still affects people living in the region. To do this, the authors investigate the environmental situation around the test site, people’s experiences and health consequences of the testing, and the government's support for those affected. They argue that the tests have had serious negative consequences on the health of the local population and that the legacy of nuclear tests is still evident more than 20 years after the closure of the test site.
