This paper talks about the background to Spain’s banking crisis which began in 2008, analyzes the state of the country’s banking sector in 2013, and examines progress in its banking reforms. The author says that the position of the banks has improved in 2013, however, the extent of the recovery means the banking sector will not return to pre-2008 levels of profitability for some years to come.
