This paper discusses how the drug trade emanating from Afghanistan has impacted Pakistan’s economy and society. It mainly focuses on the trade of opium, heroin and cannabis considering that Afghanistan is the lead producer of these drugs and Pakistan a key transit country as well as an end-use destination. The author begins with a brief history of the drug trade in the region over the last few years and an analysis of key trends in the drug market. She then assesses how drugs have impacted Pakistan’s security landscape, its political development, and its illicit economy.
