This brief outlines the economic and political factors shaping the development of West Africa. The author argues that these factors, namely the region’s growing importance as a source of natural resources, its rapid population growth, its climate vulnerability, its continued political instability, and its regional integration project, provide both challenges and opportunities for West African and more generally African development and economic growth.
