This paper explores the role played by ECOWAS and the African Union in addressing the humanitarian crises in Mali, mainly between January 2012 to August 2013. To do this, the author examines the involvement of the two organizations through three phases of the crisis: the origins and underlying causes of the crisis; the outbreak of the conflict and political instability in Mali and the subsequent French-led intervention; and the handover from the African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA) to the UN.
