This paper argues that the negotiations between the US and the EU on a free trade and investment partnership (the TTIP) are motivated by geopolitical concerns as both seek to counter the rise of emerging powers. The author says that the TTIP could boost economic growth for both, but this is not the only reason for the agreement. Another reason is to restore to the US and EU the power to establish the ground rules for the world economy. However, he also warns that there is no guarantee that negotiations will succeed and that even if they do it could cause the world market to split into rival trade blocs.
