In this paper, the author talks about the role he believes the state of India has played in the persistence of poverty and social injustice in the country. He first provides a historical account of the actions of the Indian state in regard to poverty and then goes on to discuss the strengths and limitations of Akhil Gupta’s 2012 book “Red Tape: Bureaucracy, Structural Violence and Poverty in India”. Finally, he evaluates the extent to which recent legislation in India addresses the problem of social injustice in the country.
