This brief reviews the challenges the Chinese government faces in carrying out effective nuclear oversight and offers policy recommendations on how it can strengthen its uranium governance system. The authors suggest that China should carry out a peer review of its uranium regulatory system to help it identify any weaknesses and loopholes in oversight coverage. It also says that China should improve the level of transparency related to how its nuclear oversight policies are implemented and clarify regulatory structures and legislation.
