This paper talks about social accountability, which according to the author, concerns the responsibility and responsiveness of state authorities, as well as the ability of citizens to hold those in power accountable, and looks at its role in development efforts in rural Africa. The article first talks about the reasons social accountability has growing support in policy circles and then reviews the main social accountability mechanisms that have been implemented in rural Africa. Finally, the author talks about some of the lessons learned about support for social accountability from governments, donors, and NGOs.
