This paper looks at India’s interests and strategy in the South China Sea (SCS). The author argues that due to a considerable expansion of India’s engagement with countries around the SCS, it appears to be emerging as an indispensable element in the strategic discourse of the region. He also describes the main features of India's approach to the region and suggests they include an interest in 1) freedom of navigation; 2) the peaceful resolution of disputes; and 3) respect of international laws.
