This paper discusses international developments in nuclear safety and security, with a particular focus on the Nuclear Security Summit as well as nuclear safety and security in Africa. The author argues that although the Nuclear Security Summit process has helped place greater emphasis on improving international nuclear security, it should be seen in the context of other multilateral initiatives. The author then calls for the development of a thorough, continent-wide nuclear security threat assessment framework in Africa and underlines the need for the continent's countries to make themselves heard when it comes to creating international nuclear security frameworks.
