In this testimony before the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, the CFR's Michael Levi reviews both the geopolitical advantages and risks of the US energy boom, particularly in relation to Russia. He warns, however, that although the boom provides obvious economic and security-related advantages, policymakers need to be careful about overestimating what it can actually do. Indeed, there are economic and environmental downsides to exporting oil and gas, which means the US needs to continue exploring the opportunities found in alternative forms of energy.
