In light of Russia's annexation of Crimea, this commentary discusses the implications of Russian energy exports to the EU. The author first examines Russia's financial relations and disagreements over gas supplies with Ukraine. She then assesses the level of EU dependence on Russia as an energy supplier before going on to examine possible medium- to long-term energy supply alternatives. She argues that the EU needs to diversify its energy supply as this would reduce geopolitical risks associated with fossil fuel supplies and expand the Unions foreign policy leeway.
