This paper discusses Indonesia's announcement in March 2014 that China's claims in the South China Sea overlap with the territory of its Riau province. The author argues that this declaration means that Indonesia is now party to the South China Sea conflict with China, ending the strategic ambiguity which had existed over the issue, and that it is likely to heighten tensions in the region. She also talks about Indonesia’s mediation efforts on the South China conflict and the actions China has taken which Indonesia thinks have undermined the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas.
