This paper examines the historical and economic background of Ukraine’s 2014 crisis and the claim that Crimea’s declaration of independence from the Ukraine is compatible with international law. After presenting an overview of the situation in Ukraine, it assesses the sanction mechanisms available to Western powers and comments on their likely impact. It also considers the situation of other states in the former soviet region that fear Russia might take aggressive action in favor of ethnic Russian minorities in their territories.
