This note discusses the history and present status of organizations banned under anti-terrorism legislation in the UK. In particular, it focuses on: 1) anti-terrorism legislation prior to 2000 and organizations proscribed under it; 2) the Terrorism Act of 2000, including its main components, the major changes it introduced, and an overview of the organizations added to the list up to December 2013; 3) the procedure organizations should follow to appeal against proscription; 4) expert analysis of the Terrorism Act 2000 and the practice of proscribing organizations; and 5) the British government’s assessment of organizations added under the Terrorism Act 2000.
