This note provides an overview of the state of stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The author argues that such developments as the increased governmental control of the country’s territory and the success of joint military operations in disbanding the rebel armed group M23 and other militias demonstrate that there is momentum toward stability in the country. However, he also points out that stability is not assured due to such factors as continuing regional and ethnic rivalries, the high numbers of still active armed groups and the precarious position of the government.
