This set of two articles discusses the dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands. The first paper explores the background of the dispute and suggests its short term management requires strong political leadership from both sides and that communication between the defense forces is important to help prevent any accidental escalation. In the long term, it proposes the nations focus on joint development of the Islands’ surrounding resources. The second paper examines narratives regarding the Islands in the context of a rising China and declining Japan. It also discusses potential US reactions to a flare up of the dispute.
