This monograph examines how the Los Zetas criminal organization uses extreme violence to advance its power and influence in Mexico and Central America. The violence is used, for example, to diversify the group's criminal activities, maximize extortion and ransom payments, discourage desertion from its ranks, and intimidate the weak into committing crimes on its behalf. The monograph then closes by providing recommendations on how to combat Los Zetas and its operating methods.
