This paper examines various factors concerning the tide of migrants and asylum seekers fleeing turmoil in Africa and the Middle East and attempting to enter Europe. More specifically it discusses 1) where the migrants are coming from; 2) what the difference is between a migrant and a refugee; 3) which EU member states have been most affected; 4) the Dublin Regulation, an EU law that stipulates that asylum seekers must remain in the first EU country they enter; 5) the types of conditions the migrants face; 6) how the EU has responded; 7) the Schengen Zone, which eliminated border controls between 26 European countries; and 8) the main proposals for managing the issue.
