This backgrounder discusses the downstream effects the Chavez regime's economic policies had on Venezuela. More specifically, it examines how the country's move towards a more oil-based economy debased its currency, led to price-controlled shortages of consumer goods, and undermined the economic stability of Venezuela's neighbors. The analysis then closes by looking at the Maduro government's attempts to deal with the problems they’ve inherited.
