This paper uses data from UK manufacturing firms from 2000 to 2009 to examine how companies responded to the financial crisis that started in 2007-08. The authors first investigate whether the entry of new firms into the exporting business was affected by the financial crisis. They then compare the performance of exporters in terms of employment and sales growth as well as survival, with that of the non-exporters before and during the crisis. Overall, they find that exporters were more likely to perform well in and out of the crisis than non-exporters.
