This report explores the relationship between violence, Islamic terrorism and the tricky political situation in China's Xinjiang region. More specifically, it questions whether the March 2014 attacks in the Kunming railway station and other violent events in China have been the result of Islamic terrorism, as the government claims. Indeed, rather than see China as a post-911 target of religious extremism, the report ultimately offers up another explanation -- the resentment of Turkic language-speaking Sunni Muslims against specific government policies in Xinjiang.
