This report analyzes China’s growing involvement in the African security landscape. The author first reviews the evolution of the African security agenda, as well as China’s emerging interest in it. He then argues that China’s approach of gradually increasing engagement in peace and security matters in Africa seeks to address the difficulties associated with its expanding role in international institutions and its significant economic presence on the continent. He also describes the main security challenges China’s economic engagement in Africa is confronted with and discusses possible future scenarios for China’s involvement in security on the continent.
