This note provides an overview of the history and evolution of the European Union. It explains the key treaties that led to the formation and enlargement of the EU and briefly outlines the major European institutions, EU law and the EU budget. The note also includes a selection of statistics comparing the EU to the US, Japan, China and Russia as well as some key indicators for each of the current EU member and candidate states.
